Vintage Ceremonial Pendant Necklace Middle Eastern Arabic Asia East India
An exquisitely detailed and dramatic handmade vintage necklace from India or the Middle East. Pendant is approximately three inches tall, is hung by rosette-adorned rail slides to one of two thick rope-style lengths of chain. On each side are hung six circular discs, each approximately an inch in diameter, inscribed with Middle Eastern or Indian writing. The writing plane is horizontal, not curved as on coins, suggesting that the discs might have been cut from a larger inscribed flat. The discs are also hung by rail slides which alternate with oval spacers so they remain in fixed positions on the ropes. Two of the discs are possibly brass or bronze and worn areas reveal the same metal on the other discs. The necklace is quite heavy (well over a pound) and easily large enough to fit over the head; the S-shaped clasp is beautifully designed and detailed but is not meant to open. The beautiful workmanship can also be seen on the back side of the necklace in images 6, 7, 8 and 9. The artist’s signature is on the back of the pendant, rendered in tiny indentations. The overall patina is of tarnished silver with areas of worn plating over what may be bronze or brass but there may also be other metals in the composition of the plating, possibly pewter or nickel. Application of silver polish to a hidden area did not remove much of the tarnish. Trying to clean up this necklace with chemical solutions is not advisable because of the mixture of metals and plating involved, and the unique patina is really part of the necklace’s story and part of its charm. Approximate measurements can be taken from the ruler shown on several of the images.
